J. HORNEMAN

A little more about me ...

I’m a full-stack engineer, designer, and founder working at the intersection of technology, politics, public affairs, media, and civic data. For more than 15 years, I’ve built digital products for organizations that need to explain complicated ideas, move audiences, and launch reliable tools under real-world pressure. My work spans enterprise-grade web platforms, campaign and advocacy sites, data visualization, geospatial applications, CMS-driven publishing systems, brand identity, motion, and interactive storytelling.

I founded Grand Republic as a creative technology studio for movements, brands, campaigns, and organizations with big ideas to communicate clearly. Running the company has made me both a builder and a strategist. I work directly with clients to define the problem, shape the scope, translate business goals into technical requirements, assemble teams, guide contractors, manage delivery, and stay accountable for the final product. I’m comfortable moving from early discovery and concept development into architecture, design systems, implementation, launch, and long-term iteration.

As an engineer, I work primarily in Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, SQL, and Swift. My preferred stack includes Django, Wagtail, React, Next.js, Prismic, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, GeoDjango, Mapbox, MapLibre, D3.js, GSAP, Framer Motion, Docker, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Vercel, Netlify, CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and modern frontend tooling. I’ve also been building LLM-powered data pipelines and workflow automation systems that help turn large, messy datasets into useful software products.

Some of my strongest work lives in the space between engineering and communication. I’ve led CMS architecture and full-stack development for high-visibility Google projects, including Google AI, Google DeepMind, Google Trends, and Year in Search. I’ve built interactive mapping and redistricting platforms with nationwide Census and election data. I’ve designed and developed advocacy campaigns, fundraising tools, public dashboards, landing pages, editorial platforms, and data storytelling products for national nonprofits, campaigns, civic organizations, media companies, and public affairs clients.

Before founding Grand Republic, I worked inside major political and policy organizations, including the Republican National Committee and Stand Together. That experience shaped the way I build: fast-moving environments, high stakes, many stakeholders, and a constant need to make information easier to understand. My background as a designer, developer, art director, researcher, photographer, and filmmaker gives me a broad perspective on digital work. I care about whether a product is technically sound, visually persuasive, easy to use, and strategically useful.

My work has included projects for Google, Uber, Snapchat, Girl Scouts of America, the Republican Governors Association, the RNC, the DNC, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, FOX, CNBC, The Papal Visit, Tufts University’s Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group, Stand Together, Rover, Financial Services Roundtable, National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, PennEast Pipeline, Mercury Public Affairs, Second Chances Florida, Something Else Strategies, Farmers & Ranchers for Montana, Justice Action Network, Alliance Ready Charter Schools, The International Mayors Forum, and PSEG.

Selected projects include the rebuilds of ai.google and deepmind.google; Google’s Year in Search and Trends platform; Districtr with Tufts University’s Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group; the American Redistricting Project; national charter school data dashboards; JoinGirlScouts.org landing pages; Second Chances Florida’s Yes on 4 campaign; public affairs and advocacy platforms; interactive election maps; animated data visualizations; and brand systems for organizations working in politics, education, energy, media, and civic life.

I’m especially interested in projects that combine strong engineering with public-facing impact: geospatial tools, civic data platforms, campaign technology, AI-assisted workflows, publishing systems, interactive maps, data visualization, and custom software for organizations that need to persuade, inform, or mobilize people. I like taking ambiguous problems and turning them into useful products that people can understand, maintain, and build on.

I live in Arlington, Virginia, with my wife and our three kids. When I’m not building software or working with clients, I’m usually thinking about maps, politics, design, history, old houses, or whatever project has taken over the garage.
